“On the Way to Leo” Special Mention FIC Punta del Este
With great emotion, we share that, within the framework of the 28th International Film Festival in Punta del Este, the jury composed of Zeca Britto, David Duponchel and Edward Venero, decided to grant us the special mention, within the Ibero-American Competition for Best Documentary, according to the criteria they generously shared with us after the awards ceremony:
“The honorable mention is awarded to “On the Way to Leo” by director Ana Barcena Torres, recognizing the sensitivity and relevance with which this Mexican documentary addresses a deeply contemporary issue, treating it as a fundamental part of the current human experience. The film stands out for the naturalness and respect with which it constructs its narrative, becoming a valuable reference for many families going through similar processes. From an intimate yet reflective perspective, the documentary explores the generational gap and the multiple tools that emerge to seek positive alternatives and paths of understanding. It is encouraging to witness how these stories stop being hidden or exoticized to transform into narratives infused with love, empathy and hope. For its narrative honesty and its social contribution, the jury considers that this work deserves an honorable mention”.
With this very special award, we want to continue giving visibility throughout the continent to “On the Way to Leo”; a valuable documentary film that seeks to raise awareness about transgender nature, seeking that fathers, mothers and families going through a similar situation can feel identified, speak among their peers and facing society, in an environment of respect, love and complete acceptance of their children, to whom we dedicate this beautiful distinction from the Punta del Este International Film Festival. Special thanks to Daniela Cardarello, Festival programmer, Valentín Trujillo and Andrés Rapetti, General Director of the Culture Department of the Intendancy of Maldonado, Uruguay, for all the attention received during this wonderful event, as well as to our fellow filmmakers for the wonderful shared experience.
